In Senge’s book, he talks about the learning organisation. He relates it to the scene in the movie Spartacus where slaves are asked to give up their leader. In this scene below, all slaves admit to being Spartacus and therefore dooming themselves to death. It is a compelling moment and one can easily draw a link to the same feeling that occurred in the Boston Celtics in 2009. Here, Celtic Pride became the norm for all members of the organisation as they went about winning the NBA title.
Malibu Boats provide an excellent example of the learning organisation. Certainly the product is differentiated but the difference between it and other companies lies with the employees. Everyone uses a Malibu product and that leads to innovation, market segmentation and a powerful learning organisation. People at Malibu embrace the boating lifestyle.
